Internship At Kinetic Arts Center
My internship will be at Kinetic Arts Center, a circus and fitness gym in Oakland. I've been training there for five years and I'm hoping to continue my circus training and coaching during college and the summer. I'm specifically going to be helping create the rope ladder act in the Circus Kids 4 show, Flying Colors. I will be helping at the dress rehearsals as well, which is a part of the contract that I signed while working on the show.

I'm taking over the ladder rehearsal in the middle of the act process because the coach had to leave to work. She was there this rehearsal so I can know the theme, feel, and choreography of the act. There are a few places where the act isn't going too well, but that's why the coaches are here. I think that the girls need to just point their feet and their act could be perfect by the time the show comes around. I'm excited to meet them and see what they can do.

There isn't any rehearsal next week because there is a tech rehearsal for the whole cast, and I learned today that there are only two more rehearsals left for ladder including this one. The act is worse off than I thought, I think they just need to run it. Abigail came to rehearsal today to see how everything is going. We decided to cut one of the parts of the act that wasn't working with the theme and made the act too long because of how awkward it was to perform. Today we worked on having a certain path to take while moving up and down the ladder.

Makeup rehearsal is today! I always love the time that we figure out makeup. This was some of the girls' first time in any makeup so I had to help a lot with contouring and highlights. By the end I think I helped four girls find their makeup that they liked. I thought that I didn't know what I was doing but my experience in other shows really helped with everything.

Today was the second half of tech rehearsal that they didn't finish on Saturday. I could have helped but they didn't need me that day. The music and lights cues were all set today and we get to run the acts today. The girls thankfully remembered the changes that we made last week. Abigail and I talked to them about form and not being nervous even when there's an audience that they don't know. All the acts performed for the whole CK4 troupe and I was happy with how ladder went.

Today is a full dress rehearsal and I'm helping with rigging now and during the actual show this weekend. Nothing exciting happened today, we were just learning the order of the show and how the rigging is going to work. Two other kids from my troupe are helping with the show and are being really annoying so I'm staying on the other side of backstage. It actually took 3 hours to run the show because of how much we stopped.

Another dress rehearsal. I'm working the big puppet that's the enemy of the characters in the show. It's really stressful because I have to walk into the back of the gym behind the audience and the puppet is heavy and bulky. I only have three shows to do so I'm not that worried. I don't agree with how one of the directors is running the rehearsal, she keeps telling the girls their cues and what they're supposed to be and they don't have to remember.
5/14 4 hrs
There's a preview show today, only coaches are allowed today to see the show. Everything went smoothly except that one of the apparatuses was rigged too high and the girls needed to cover for the rigging for even longer. Everyone liked the show too.
5/15 2 hrs
Only some acts were asked to come in today, and ladder is one of them. We ran the act at least four times and I think the girls are going to be fine tomorrow. We worked on the character part of performing today. We made a story in the act when before it didn't have a readable story. I had to tell them constantly about their feet and legs. It's exciting to see how they progress between weeks.
5/16 4 hrs
Showtime! I'm getting flashbacks to my shows. Nothing went wrong today thankfully. I took some pictures on my phone for the girls and they were excited to see what their acts looked like. The professional photographer came and will probably have better pictures than me.
5/17 8 hrs
I'm really tired after being here for this long. I got chocolate for the dinner after the shows then left. I wanted to stay and hang out but I also needed to finish my homework. I gave the front desk my internship papers to sign. I was the only one who helped with the chores after the show, other than the parents. I had fun this week!
